Baseball Heads South to Play Central Oklahoma

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team hits the road again this weekend (March 3-5), traveling to Edmond, Okla. for a three-game MIAA series with Central Oklahoma. First pitch from Wendell Simmons Field is set for 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday before a noon start in the finale Sunday.

The Tigers head into the weekend looking to snap a five-game losing skid, sitting at 6-8 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA. The Bronchos have started the year strong, going 10-2 so far with a 2-1 record in league play. Fort Hays State is looking for its first win away from Larks Park this season.

Although the Tigers lead the all-time series 15-11, the Bronchos own an 8-6 edge in Edmond. Fort Hays State is 5-4 against UCO under skipper Steve Johnson.

Four Tigers have batting averages above .300 this season, led by Dayton Pomeroy’s .420 effort at the dish. The junior leads the team with six doubles and is tied with Trevor Hughes with four home runs. Clayton Basgall is batting .349 on the year and has a team-high two triples. Jake Lanferman paces the squad with 16 runs and 10 stolen bases so far this season. Hughes has driven in 14 runs to lead the Tigers through 14 games. The Tiger hurlers have worked for a 6.09 ERA to date, with Ryan Ruder and Zac Rothert leading the way after giving up just three earned runs in 10.2 innings on the mound.

The Bronchos are batting .336 as a team, including three players batting .400 or better. Jon Kamies has driven in 15 runs on the year, leading the team with three home runs and 33 total bases. The UCO pitching staff has earned a 4.20 ERA on the year, led by starter J.D. Cameron giving up just two earned runs in 13 innings of work.
