Tigers Use Late Burst to Escape with 86-76 Win over York College

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State finished up non-conference play on Monday night (Dec. 7) by defeating York College (Neb.) by a score of 86-76. The Tigers used a 14-3 run at the end of the game to get the 10-point win after trailing by one point with 4:12 to go in the game. FHSU improved to 6-2 overall on the season.

After the 12:32 mark of the first half, Fort Hays State led all the way until the 4:12 mark of the second half. York College went on a 13-2 tear to take the lead by one at 73-72, but Dom Samac put in a layup, Jake Stoppel had a tip-in, and Kyler Kinnamon hit a 3-point field goal to push FHSU back in front for good. Another 3-point field goal by Kenny Enoch with 59 seconds to go extended the lead back to six and Trey O’Neil and Rob Davis closed out the game with free-throws late.

Stoppel led the Tigers with a career-high 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and a 2-of-3 effort at the free-throw line. He also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Samac was right behind him with 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting with one three-point field goal. Kinnamon had 13 points and Davis added 11. Kinnamon and Enoch tied with a team-high five assists a piece.

Cameron Coleman led York with 28 points while Terrence-Cole Michael also had a hot hand with 21 points. Cole buried five 3-point field goals in the game.

The Tigers shot 52.4 percent from the field and 71.4 percent at the charity stripe. York shot 42.6 percent and 69.6 percent at the line. Neither team shot over 33 percent from the 3-point line, FHSU at 31.3 percent and York at 24.2.

Fort Hays State returns to conference play on Saturday (Dec. 12) against Nebraska-Kearney. Game time is set for 4 pm. Fans are encouraged to wear black as we attempt to Blackout the Coliseum.
