Tennis Notches First Win of Season; Downs Hastings 8-1 in Hays

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State picked up its first win of the 2015-16 season on Saturday (Sept. 19) by defeating Hastings College 8-1. The Tigers took all three doubles matches and all but one singles match to move to 1-3 overall on the season.

The No. 1 team of Laura Jimenez-Lendinez and Jessica Johnson and No. 3 team of Taylor Noel and Haley Weidemann cruised to wins in doubles action. Jimenez-Lendinez/Johnson won 8-3 and Noel/Weidemann won 8-0. The No. 2 team of Alina Villalovos and Raven Dick had to battle late in the match for their 8-6 win.

In singles play, two Tigers won a pair of three-set thrillers and three won in straight sets to tally five more team points. The Tigers dominated in the No. 4 through No. 6 positions.

Dick won her match at No. 4 in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, Weidemann won her match at No. 5 in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, and Noel won her match at No. 6 in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 1 singles, Jimenez-Lendinez took the first set 6-1 before dropping the second 6-4. She bounced back to win the third-set tiebreak 10-6. Villalovos won her match at No. 3 in the same fashion, winning the first set 6-3 before falling in the second 6-2. She fought off a match point and rallied to win the third-set tiebreak 11-9.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday (Sept. 22) at 4 pm in Hays against Kansas Wesleyan.
