Halloween Ghost Story, the Spirit Board

Do you believe in an afterlife? Do you believe in ghosts, spirits, or demons? I have always been a believer in the paranormal and have experienced it a couple of times in my life. During my time going to college at Fort Hays is where I experienced one of the greatest and weirdest stories in my life.

It was in the winter of 1991, I was a sophomore in college and living with my fraternity brothers. One of the brother’s girlfriends one night at the house pulled out am Ouija board and we started playing it, calling spirits to talk with us, things you do on a game that is mass-produced to speak to the dead. It seemed pretty cool, but I was skeptical. I was sure that the two people talking to the spirit were moving the pointer themselves. That’s when we decided to make our own spirit board, we were told that if it’s made instead of purchased the connection to the spirit world is much stronger. On a small table we cut out letters, numbers and the phrases “hello” and “goodbye” and placed them on the edge of a small table, our pointer was a glass ashtray. Now with everything in place it was time to contact the spirits.

On a cold February night, my friend and I, along with about 5 others watching, asked the question, “Is there anyone with us?” It took a couple of minutes but our pointer began to move. My friend and I were amazed and asked each other if we were moving it with the answer always being no. We asked the spirit who they were, where they were from, why they were here, as we did that, the story of the spirit got more interesting and in-depth.
We were speaking with a man from New York who was caught in a love triangle with his best friend’s wife. For 45 minutes this story went on about love, jealousy and eventually murder. Our spirit was pushed in front of a subway train and killed by his friend. During this entire conversation, my friend and I continued to ask each other, “Are you doing this?” This story was so detailed and elaborate there is no way it couldn’t have really been a spirit speaking with us. After an hour the pointer slowed down and answer became few and far between, we asked the spirit to say goodbye. The pointer slid over to goodbye and our link with the afterlife was closed. For the rest of the weekend we played with our homemade Ouija board, never getting the same results. That night and that conversation made me believe that there is something more after we die.
