The Fort Hays State University rodeo team successfully competed last weekend in Pratt.
“We had 17 kids competing, and Jacob Welker was one of the bullfighters,” said Bronc Rumford, head coach.
Tonnica Ouellette, Yoder, Colo. junior, made the championship round and finished 6th out of 106 competitors in the goat tying event.
Jacob Willems, Windom sophomore, made the championship round and finished 5th in the bareback riding event.
The team roping duo, Matt Rezac, Onaga freshman, and Tye Nickell, Norton junior, also made the championship round and finished 5th.
“I was very pleased with our kids as we had several more that just missed qualifying for the championship round,” Rumford said. “Both men’s and women’s teams are very young, and we are in the toughest region in college rodeo, which makes our performance very positive”.
After a complete round of competition, only the top 10 competitors in each event make the championship round.
“There were just a few entries short of 500 competitors entered from 25 colleges and universities across Kansas and Oklahoma,” Rumford said.
This weekend the rodeo team will travel to Oklahoma for Oklahoma State University’s Cowboys Roughrider Roundup College Rodeo.
