Free health screening coming to hays

As a part of National Health Care Week, August 10-16, Walgreens, 2600 Vine, Hays, will host a free health screening in their parking lot with help from The First Care Clinic, 105 W. 13th Hays, and The Lions Club. Screenings are free of charge to all, regardless of health insurance. Services are available on Friday, August 15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, August 16 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Diagnostic testing available includes a diabetes and blood glucose test, blood pressure checks, hearing and vision acuity, and field of vision testing. One feature of the service is a newer technology called PediaVision which allows diagnostic vision tests in children as young as six months.

Dan Heersche has been driving the 38 foot gooseneck mobile unit for four years.

“The technology has been around for about two years. The newest updates have really increased reliability. The mobile unit has had PediaVision for about 18 months and can test the old and the young all though individuals with smaller pupils are less easily scanned,” Heersche said.

The testing is non-invasive and very quick.

“If the sweet spot on a child is found, the scan can finish in about three seconds. They are easier to scan because their pupils are larger than adults. The refractive technology bounces off the retina to detect abnormalities,” Heersche said. The mobile screening unit is used around the country by The Lions Club along with two hearing stations and two vision stations to help decrease wait time, and citizens do not have to worry about being turned away if they are still in line when the event ends.

“It doesn’t matter if I have to work an extra hour or two. I’m there. I work until I’m done,” Heersche said.

In Kansas, the PediaVision technology has scanned around 4,000 individuals, including 700 children. Last year at the Kansas State fair, 2,800 fair goers received PediaVision services in a ten day period.

“You never know when you’ll find that one person who really needs to see you,” Heersche said.
