How can students keep from stressing out during finals week?

Maggie Denning, coordinator of academic success programs, hosts workshops each year on this very topic. Denning’s workshops provide tips for students on how to keep from stressing about finals.

“The biggest mistake students make when studying for finals is waiting until the last minute. It is best if students study everyday as if their test is tomorrow,” Denning said.

Denning said tests in college are not the same as high school. In college students have to be able to grasp the concept and understand it on a deeper level, unlike high school where the content may only touch the surface of a subject.

Denning also had advice about where a student should study.

“The best place for students to study for finals is the second floor of the library. It is very quiet and conducive for studying,” Denning said. “The library has all the resources a student could need when it comes to studying.”

Denning suggested a few stress-relieving activities that could help students during finals week. “Students should exercise, take breaks, watch a sunrise or a sunset, just have some ‘me’ time.”

Denning’s workshop was held on April 16. However, if students weren’t able to attend, they can watch the presentation here.
