SGA Official Elections Results

On April 28, on the Fort Hays State University’s Student Government Association website, the student senator election vote results were published, this was combined with the totals and percentages released at the SGA meeting on April 10.

A total number of 502 students voted in the election and with FHSU having an enrollment of 13,441 in the 2013-2014 academic year, there was a less than four percent voter turnout.

Elections for freshmen and incoming Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science senators will be held in the fall.

With a long list of potential senators receiving write in votes, most  were not given a senate seat, as their name was voted upon as a joke, or not seriously.

“We contacted all of the individuals who were written in as candidates to determine whether their name was written in as a serious candidate. Sometimes, people are written in by friends as a joke so we wanted to verify with those students. Those who said that they were not interested in a seat, were eliminated as candidates. By my count, there were 26 write-in candidates. Of those, seven have a seat,” said Sam Cooper, chair of the elections committee and Hays senior.

There was also an SGA Constitutional Amendment passed as an outcome of the election, passed with over 95 percent of the vote.
