CLEVELAND – Fort Hays State University wrapped up one of its best years in recent history ranked 50th in the final Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, released by the organization Thursday(June 8). It is the highest final ranking for the Tigers since the 2002-03 season (47th).

The men’s track and field team generated 54.5 points for the Tigers after its 19th-place finish at the NCAA Championships last month, giving FHSU a total of 355.0 points for the year. It is the highest point total for the Tigers since the award was expanded to include Division II in 1995-96, breaking the previous record of 298.5 points set in 1996-97.

Fort Hays State opened the year with a strong fall, ranking seventh in the standings with 193 points coming from men’s soccer (fifth), women’s soccer (ninth) and women’s cross country (18th). Wrestling (12th) and men’s indoor track (30th) combined to add 107.5 points in the winter, placing the Tigers in 19th place overall after the winter season.

After leading all MIAA schools in the standings at the conclusion of the winter season, the Tigers finished sixth overall in the league. The MIAA placed 11 programs inside the top 100 in the standings, more than any other conference in the country. In total, 268 schools generated points this season.

The Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings are based off national finishes in NCAA Championship sports. The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.
