Tigers Hang On Against RiverHawks to Win Third Straight

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State pushed its win streak to three games with a 73-66 win over Northeastern State on Thursday night (Feb. 9) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers moved to 14-8 overall, 8-6 in the MIAA with the win, while Northeastern State dropped its ninth-straight contest going to 3-19 overall, 2-12 in the MIAA. The three-game win streak is the longest of the season for FHSU.

Hadley Gillum had a double-double, producing a career-high in points with 21 and 11 rebounds. He finished an efficient 9-of-13 from the field while adding a 3-of-5 effort at the free-throw line.

Three other Tigers reached double figures. With a free-throw in the first half, Rob Davis reached 1,000 points in his career and went on to score 16 in the game. Trey O’Neil had 13 points and JaQuan Smith added 10. Kyler Kinnamon dished out a team-best six assists. As a team, the Tigers shot 53.1 percent from the field.

The Tigers trailed only one time in the game, from the 17:14 to 13:11 marks of the first half. FHSU used an 11-0 run to take an eight-point lead, then led by 10 twice before taking a 41-34 lead into halftime.

The Tiger lead grew as large as 13 points in the second half at the 7:23 mark, but Northeastern State fought back to pull within three at the 2:12 mark. The RiverHawks trimmed the lead to three twice more before a pair of Grant Holmes free-throws with 16 seconds remaining iced the game for FHSU.

Tanner Mouse led Northeastern State in scoring with 17 points, while Karon Waller had 14, Juvon Turner had 12, and Montre’ Williams had 10.

Now in a tie for fifth place in the MIAA standings, the Tigers look to pull even with Central Oklahoma on Saturday (Feb. 11). The Bronchos come to Hays with an identical overall record to the Tigers at 14-8, but they are one game up in the conference standings at 9-5. The game is set for 4 pm.
