Men’s Soccer Finishes No. 12 in Final NSCAA Division II Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After claiming its third consecutive Central Regional Championship in the NCAA Tournament, Fort Hays State was ranked No. 12 in the final release of the NSCAA Division II Top 25 Poll for the 2016 season on Tuesday (Dec. 6). FHSU finished at 14-5-1 overall, setting a new record for wins in a season in the program’s young history.

The No. 12 ranking is the highest of the season for FHSU, which spent the majority of the year between the No. 15 and No. 25 rankings in the poll. Fort Hays State was ranked in every release of the poll this year.

The Tigers advanced to the national quarterfinals for the third consecutive year, this time winning the Central Region Championship of the NCAA Tournament on its home field. The Tigers fell in the national quarterfinal match to Rockhurst, the No. 3 team in the final poll, by a score of 1-0.

FHSU enjoyed 12 All-MIAA selections which included Maurizio Costa, Mauricio Castorino, Michael Yantz, Luis Torres, Drew Wilson, Derick Gonzalez, Luis Mendez, Sergio Villalba, Killian Gorman, Tobias Patino, Michael Cole, and Arsenio Chamorro.

Six of those all-conference selections earned all-region nods, which included Costa, Castorino, Torres, Wilson, Gonzalez, and Mendez. Torres was named to the D2CCA All-America Team as a back/defender.

Fort Hays State has now made five consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament after the program has existed only six years. Head coach Brett Parker has an overall record of 72-32-14 guiding the program all six years.
