Four Tigers earn NSCAA All-Region Accolades

KANSAS CITY, Mo – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team had four Tigers honored by the National Soccer Coaches Associate of America with All-Central Region selections. The Tigers selected were defender Luis Torres, midfielder Derick Gonzalez, forward Maurizio Costa and forward Mauricio Castorino.

Torres added another piece of hardware after being selected to the D2CAA All-Central Region First Team and earning All-American accolades from the same association. The sophomore defender was one of the top scoring defenders in the MIAA with seven goals this season, tied for third most on the team and seventh in the MIAA. He led the team in minutes played (1,718) and helped the team to six shutouts this season.

A junior midfielder, Gonzalez claims his second All-Region honor after he was also selected to the All-Central Region Team by the D2CAA earlier this season. The junior transfer from San Jacinto (Texas) College has been a big addition to the offense this year, leading the team with ten goals. He also added two assists on the year for 22 points on the season, good for third in the MIAA.

Costa also picked up his section All-Region selection of the year after being named to the D2CAA All-Region Team earlier this season, bringing his career total to four. The senior forward led the Tigers with 24 points (eight goals, eight assists) on the year and was fourth in the MIAA in the same category. Costa wrapped up his FHSU career as one of the best offensive performers in program history, currently tied for fourth all-time with 54 points in just three years wearing the Black and Gold.

Castorino earned his second-straight D2CCA All-Region First Team honor and, like the other three Tigers, his second All-Region award of the season. The junior was the Region Player of the Year and MIAA Player of the Year last year. He put up solid numbers once again this year, tallying five goals and 10 assists for 20 points. He tied for the MIAA and region lead in assists.

Ten of the 11 members of the All-Central Region team represent the MIAA, with Lindenwood also garnering four spots on the team and Northeastern State picking up two nods.
