Three Tigers Win at UNK Holiday Inn Open, Inman Named Outstanding Wrestler

KEARNEY, Neb. – Fort Hays State had three champions at the UNK Holiday Inn Open on Saturday (Nov. 19). Jon Inman and Christian Lance made it a perfect 3-of-3 winning tournament so far this year, while Brandon Ball collected his second tournament title of the season. Inman was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler as he blazed his way through the Elite Division 197-pound class.
Inman, the No. 4 ranked wrestler at 197 pounds in NCAA Division II, dominated to a 4-0 performance, picking up two technical falls, a decision, and a fall. He blanked Barrett Hamilton of Morningside 16-0 in the first round, defeated Cody Marquez 6-2 in the quarterfinals, blitzed past Ken Burkhardt Jr. of Concordia (Neb.), then pinned Trey Schlender, an unattached wrestler, at 4:27 in the championship match. Inman is now 11-0 on the season.

Lance now has a record of 15-0 after winning five matches on Saturday for his third-straight tournament title. He scored two major decisions and three regular decisions on the day. He started with a 9-1 major over Devante Ragland of Colby (Kan.) Community College before defeating Gabriel Escobedo of New Mexico Highlands 5-2. He defeated Robert Schneider of Central Missouri with a 16-3 major, then won 8-4 over Odgerek Batkhishig of Northwest Kansas Tech. In the championship, he defeated Cooper Cogdill of Chadron State.

Ball moved to 11-2 on the season with a 4-0 performance on Saturday. He posted a pair of major decisions and a pair of regular decisions. He beat Juan Rivera of Baker 10-0 in the first round before dispatching of Brad Irwin from Central Missouri 10-1 in the quarterfinals. He went on to defeat Martin Ramirez of Adams State 5-2 in the semifinals, then Jacob Wasser of UNK 5-2 in the championship match.

Micquille Robinson and Rakim Dean placed for the Tigers as well, Robinson taking third place at 174 pounds in the Amateur Division and Dean taking fifth at 184 pounds in the Elite Division. Robinson went 6-1 for the day with his only loss in the semifinals by fall in 6:44. He had four decisions and a technical fall before taking the third-place match by 12-3 major decision over Drew Hinkle of Colorado School of Mines. Dean went 2-2, capping his day with a 23-7 tech fall over John Lewis of CSU-Pueblo.

The Tigers get a week off before hosting Lindenwood in a conference dual on December 1. The annual FHSU-Bob Smith Open will be on Saturday, December 3.
