Whitten Earns Tournament MVP; Spainhour Picks Up All-Tournament Honors

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – For the second consecutive weekend, Fort Hays State volleyball senior Crystal Whitten has been given Tournament MVP honors, this time for her performance at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Volleyball Invitational, hosted by Westminster College. Joining Whitten on the All-Tournament team was fellow senior Rebekah Spainhour.

Whitten led all competitors with 60 kills through the four-match tournament, averaging 3.53 successful attacks per set. The Wichita, Kan. native ranked in the top eight for the weekend in both digs (54) and service aces (six). She recorded 10 or more kills in each match, eclipsing 16 kills three times. Whitten also recorded three double-doubles, recording as many as 21 digs in a match.

Spainhour’s name was listed atop numeral statistical categories for the weekend, leading the way with an impressive .378 hitting percentage, 22 total blocks and 72.0 points while ranking second with 55 kills. The Derby, Kan. native reached double-digit kills three times, tying her personal-best with 19 against Westminster Saturday (Sept. 10).

The Tigers were the only team to finish 4-0 in the tournament, leading the tournament with a .242 attack percentage, 12.29 assists per set, 2.47 blocks per set and an opponent’s attacking percentage of just .135.
