Events planned to remember 9/11

FHSU’s American Democracy Project and Tigers in Service will be sponsoring two events in remembrance of the 9/11 attacks.

The first event will be a candlelight vigil Wednesday, beginning at 8:30 p.m. on the patio of the Memorial Union, marking the anniversary of 9/11.

Chris Roberts, student government association president and Salina junior, is scheduled to speak at the event, according to a FHSU press release. Other events planned included a signing of “America the Beautiful” with other traditional songs, following the lighting of the candles. Members of the Kansas National Guard will also present the colors, according to the release.

The second event will be a Day of Service on Friday. Students will have several opportunities throughout the day to “to remember the lost” by delivering packets to businesses throughout the community for the United Way organization. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the release.

“Anywhere between those hours students can come by Custer Hall 202 and pick up packets that they will then deliver,” organizers said, in an email response.

“Volunteers can pick up as many or as few as they would like and directions will be printed out for the convenience of the volunteers. Our goal is to deliver 87 packets,” they said.

To volunteer, students can send email requests to service@fhsu.edu or more information can be obtained by contacting Anne Drees, American democracy project student coordinator and Hays senior, at 628-5399 or by email at adp@fhsu.edu.
