Tiger Baseball Falls 3-2 in Series Opener to Gorillas

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Fort Hays State dropped the opening game of a three-game series at Pittsburg State Thursday (Apr. 28) by a score of 3-2. FHSU dropped to 19-26 overall and 13-21 in the MIAA. PSU improved to 14-29 overall and 9-25 in the conference.

The Tigers led early after scoring a run in both the second and the third innings. Caleb Cherryholmes led off the second with a solo homer to right field, his second homer in as many games. In the third, Clayton Basgall led off with a double then Austin Unrein put the Tigers up 2-0 after a sacrifice fly that plated Basgall.

Pittsburg State got on the board in the third after a sacrifice fly of the bat of Gage Grant that scored Andrew Vogelbaugh. The Gorillas knotted the score at 2-2 after a solo home run from Christian Arnold in the sixth. In the ninth, Grant delivered a walk-off RBI single to lift the Gorillas past the Tigers.

Kyle Vogt started the game for the Tigers and lasted 6.0 innings. In those 6.0 innings, he allowed two runs on nine hits, with six strikeouts and two walks. Giles Fox took the loss for the Tigers after tossing the final 2.1 innings and giving up the winning run. He allowed five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

The Tigers and Gorillas are back at it again on Friday (Apr. 29) for two games, beginning at 1 pm.
