SGA Update 4/14/2016

This meeting of the Student Government Association was called to order on Thursday, April 14th, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Black and Gold Room, Memorial Union on the campus of Fort Hays State University.

Election Results

The election results for the 2016-2017 school year are as follows:

Constitution: 339 students voted in favor of the constitution changes, 6 voted against them.

College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (6): Senator Megan Garcia, Senator Ashley Templeton, Senator Alyssa Steppe, Senator Reilly Franek, Senator Brent Hirsch.

College of Business and Entrepreneurship (4): Senator Ulises Gonzalez, Senator Yoana Cruz, Senator Adam Schibi, Senator Kristen Jewell

College of Education (1): Senator Jessica Lineberger

College of Health and Behavioral Sciences (8): Senator Magaly Lozoya, Senator Lucy Partlow-Loyall

College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics (6): Senator Jasmine Turley, Senator Samantha Rohleder, Senator Jacob Schoenfeld, Senator Jon Whitehead, Senator Kenton Linsey

Student Body President- Emily Brandt

Vice-President- Vivian Agnew

Executive Reports

President Gonzalez congratulated and welcomed the new senate for the 2016-2017 school year. Gonzalez shared that he had the opportunity to meet with the Apollo 13 crew at the reception last week, and also volunteered with a Leadership 310 team to talk about social emotions with young children.

Legislative Affairs Director Brandt announced that she will be going to the Kansas Board of Regents to talk about the issues surrounding what is known as the Transgender Bathroom bill. She asks that any questions about the bill be directed at her.

Campus Relations Director Vincent met with Kenton Russell to discuss the University 101 and to redesign Freshman Seminar classes. Vincent is on the lookout for 20 students to be “success coaches” meaning they will co-teach the seminar classes. She asks that if anyone is interested they let her know.

Committee Reports

Appropriations Committee had one bill up for first reading and one bill up for second reading.

Senate Affairs Committee had one bill up for first reading.

Student Relations and Involvement Committee worked on projects for the Big Event.

Legislative and Political Action Committee had 3 fee review resolutions up for second reading and put up final recommendations for first reading.

Guest Speakers

Mackenzie Orchard came and discussed her undergrad research with the senate. She is conducting a survey about law and sexual assault to help gather information and statistics.

 

Old Business

Resolutions 16/S/100-16/S/102 Fee Reviews were up for second reading and each passed. Bill 16/S/120 was up for second reading from the Appropriations Committee and also passed.

New Business

Bill 16/S/121 from the Senate Affairs Committee was up for first reading Thursday.

Announcements

Delta Zeta will be hosting their annual “Paint a Turtle” event in the quad on Thursday from 11:00 a.m to 2:00 pm.
