Tigers Cruise to 39-3 Conference Win at Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – Fort Hays State dropped only one match as it wrapped up the dual schedule with a second straight MIAA win, defeating Newman 39-3 on Thursday (Feb. 11). With the win, the Tigers moved to 7- 5 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA.

The match could not have started better for the Tigers as Dakota Gulley was awarded six points at 285 pounds with a win by forfeit.

The following 125-pound bout was the only setback of the night for the Tigers as Adam Ludwin suffered a 4-0 loss to No. 2 ranked Dustin Reed. From that point, the dual was all Fort Hays State as the next eight matches gave the Tigers 33 straight points.

A 3-1 decision from Anthony Calderon (133) was followed by back-to-back pins from Jacob Kay (141) and Bradley Little (149) to extend the Tiger lead to 21-3. Both pins falls came in the first period as Kay recorded his at 1:43 and Little’s came at 2:46.

At 157 pounds, Joey Dozier defeated Colton Duhr for the second time this season with a 3-1 decision that increased the Fort Hays State lead to 24-3.

Kregg Clarke then added three more points with a 5-2 decision over Noel Toress in the 165-pound bout and Dylan Wiesner increased the Tiger lead to 33-3 with the win by forfeit at 174 pounds.

No. 6 ranked Jon inman increased his overall record to 29-1 at 184 pounds as he handled Kyle Ryan easily for a 7-0 decision. Cash Drylie wrapped up the match with and a 7-5 decision over Dalton Weidle making the final 39-3.

The next test for the Tigers will be the MIAA Championships in St. Charles, Mo., on Sunday (Feb. 14), where they took third place a year ago.
