Election Year Underway at FHSU

Now that is is 2016, those who frequent the voting booths probably know it’s an election year; and the American Democracy Project is helping to prepare people who have never experienced voting before.

From February 3rd to February 4th the American Democracy Project will be hosting Voter Registration Week. Members of the ADP will be in the Memorial Union from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm all 3 days to help students, as well as community members register.

The American Democracy Project at Fort Hays State University  is a movement with initiatives that encourage American colleges and universities to prepare the next generation of informed, engaged citizens for the U.S. democracy. Megan Garcia, who works with the ADP says, “Voter registration is incredibly important because young adults make up almost 22% of the electorate. As young people, we should take advantage of our right to vote. We have enough power to make our voices heard and make a significant change.”

In order to vote in an election in the state of Kansas, you must be registered 21 days or more before the actual election day. That is why the ADP planned this event when they did. The Kansas voting dates begin in early March, so anyone who registers at the event should be set to cast their ballot come March.
