HAYS, Kan. — Fort Hays State University landed a position on the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

“Receiving the President’s Higher Education and Community Service Honor Roll Distinction is always a great achievement for Fort Hays State University,” said Dr. Curt Brungardt, executive director of the university’s Center for Civic Leadership. “The President’s Honor Roll recognizes those colleges and universities who have excelled at providing important community service in the community in which they reside,” he said.
“Through the Center for Civic Leadership activities, many service learning courses, the work of student organizations and the Center for Student Involvement, FHSU is a leader in civic engagement.”
The Center for Civic Leadership (CCL) applied for the award last semester. In April, they were notified that FHSU was among the schools named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
This year, the CCL and FHSU students participated in volunteer activities such as Alternative winter Break, Paint-A-Thon and SWIPE out Hunger. The CCL also houses the American Democracy Project, Global Leadership Project, Tigers in Service and Women’s Leadership Project.
FHSU was also on the honor roll in 2008.
The CNCS began administering the award in 2006 after thousands of college students raced to the aide of Gulf Coast residents following Hurricane Katrina. CNCS manages the program in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the American Council on Education and Campus Compact.
