HAYS, Kan. —
Set for 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, outspoken representatives of the conservative and liberal wings of their respective parties will square off on the topic: “The Proper Role of Government in a Free Society.”

This road show is not new. Videos of Dean and Santorum debating the same topic at Cornell and Northwestern can be found with a simple Google search. However, Santorum is considered by many a bonafide conservative Republican and Dean, though deeply skeptical of the main cost-control mechanism of Obamacare, has urged Congress to reject attempts at defunding the President’s signature health care reform.
These men have fundamentally irreconcilable differences, and neither are known for timidity. And since the issue of the proper role of government in a free society is far from settled, and Dean and Santorum are passionate advocates for clearly contrasting answers to that question, the potential for an illuminating barn-burner exists.
This is well worn territory for Santorum and Dean, but it’s unlikely the pair will arrive at anything resembling consensus. The debate at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center holds the potential for heat and light on this very important question. And for young college students seeking clarity in a turbulent world sometimes a little light, no matter how faint, can be enough to illuminate the path ahead.
