Campers lined up on Sunday to check into High Plains Music Camp at Fort Hays State University. About 275 students are attending this year’s camp, many of whom attended previous years.
Faculty members greeted them like old friends as they handed out information packets, bright yellow bags, green T-shirts and water bottles.
Many of the faculty members are alumni and nearly all of them have participated in camp.
Raenna Peacock, a Hays sophomore majoring in music at FHSU, attended camp for two years and now works as an intern helping faculty and students. All the counselors from last year decided to come back, so no counselor slots were open; however, next year she would like to be one.
“I want to be someone people can look up to not only as a musician, but as a person,” said Peacock.
Some of the people helping with registration were volunteers. Darren Lynch, WaKeeney, decided to help because his wife, Tricia, is the administrative assistant for the music department.
“I wanted to. It’s the right thing to do,” he said. “And I’m an alum. It’s exciting for kids to come to Fort Hays.”
Peacock said that she and the other people at registration “represent Fort Hays State as a college that warmly welcomes people of all ages.”
