Assistant vice president of Student Affairs leaves FHSU

By Summer Alford

Shana Meyer, assistant vice president for Student Affairs at Fort Hays State University, headed to St. Joseph, Mo., for a new job as Vice President of Student Affairs at Missouri Western University, effective April 1.

Meyer worked at FHSU for seven years. She said that moving into the vice president position at Missouri Western is a promotion for her, bringing more responsibility and opportunities to Shanna Meyer lead a major university department on her own.

In her position at FHSU, Meyer had oversight of the following areas of the university: diversity affairs, first-year experience, fraternity and sorority life, international student services, judicial affairs, the Memorial Union, student retention, residential life, student activities, Student Government, student organizations, student publications, the Tiger Card Center, and the Tiger Tots Nurtury Center.

The search has already begun to find a replacement. The application deadline was March 27, with the search expanding nationwide to fill the position. The Office of Student Affairs is not necessarily looking to promote someone from within the department; instead it is looking to hire someone who is the best possible candidate for the job, Meyer said.

Prior to joining the FHSU staff, Meyer worked at Emporia State University, Kansas State University in Manhattan, and Kansas State University at Salina.

While looking forward to her new job, Meyer acknowledged she had mixed feelings about leaving Hays.

“In the past seven years, we’ve made a lot of friends in Hays and grown to enjoy all it has to offer, from the schools to the community events. I have worked with some fantastic people in the department and will miss all of my colleagues…

I’ve enjoyed my time at FHSU and hope to stay in contact with friends, colleagues and students.”
