Tigers fall on short end of high-scoring contest against Southwestern Oklahoma State

Fort Hays State University dropped a non-conference contest with Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 25) at Larks Park in Hays, Kan. FHSU rallied for five runs in the eighth to tie the game 10-10 before seeing SWOSU plate two runs in the ninth to take the game 12-10.

The teams combined for eight home runs in the game, four for each. Austin Unrein hit two for the Tigers, while Jacob Spring of SWOSU also hit two.

Unrein put the Tigers on top 3-0 after one inning with a three-run homer in the first. But SWOSU responded with three in the top of the second to tie the game on a Spring solo homer and a two-run homer by Greg Bruno.

Spring pushed the Bulldogs into the lead in the fourth with another solo homer and then the Bulldogs capitalized on an error in the fifth, which led to five runs. SWOSU held a 9-3 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Unrein triggered a two-run fifth for the Tigers with a solo homer and a run came across to score on a double play later in the inning.

SWOSU extended its lead back to five, 10-5, with a run in the seventh, but FHSU stormed back in the eighth with a two-run homer by Alex King and a three-run homer by Cooper Langley to tie the game 10-10.

SWOSU loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and FHSU nearly escaped the jam, but a throw from third to first in an attempt to turn a double play got by Cooper Langley and the Bulldogs scored. A passed ball later in the inning allowed another run to score.

The Tigers had runners reach second and third in the bottom of the ninth, but a ground out ended the game.

Ethan Davis picked up the win in relief for the Bulldogs, throwing the final 1.1 innings. He allowed the homer in the eighth that tied the game. Davis moved to 3-2. Giles Fox took the loss for FHSU. He entered at the start of the ninth, but allowed two hits and two walks with a strikeout. Only one of the two runs Fox allowed was earned.

The Tigers moved to 5-18 overall. Southwestern Oklahoma State moved to 14-15.
